Top pros rev up for SurfAid Cup Margaret River
Top pros on the ASP World Championship Tour are lining up to compete in the SurfAid Cup, which will be held in conjunction with the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro, Western Australia.
This will be the third SurfAid Cup in Margaret River proudly supported by Surfing WA.
Eight teams are aiming to raise $40,000 for SurfAid, and the event will be held on Sunday 6 April 2014 at Surfers Point.
The SurfAid Cup is a tag-team style event with four surfers per team, plus one pro/legend surfer from the selection pool. The teams get to choose a pro surfer in order of their team’s fundraising results and the team that raises the most wins the SurfAid Cup fundraising trophy.
This year the eight competing teams are: MadFish Wines, Caporn Young, CineAds, HSF aka The "Bar" Boys, Macquarie WA, Property Construction, Margaret River Wineries and Grace Farm’s Finest.

The CineAds team is the defending two-time surfing champions and Caporn Young won the fundraising trophy last year by raising more than $42,000, a record for the SurfAid Cup which is also held in Sydney and Newcastle in Australia, and Malibu in California, USA.
Top pro surfers who have indicated they will compete in this year's SurfAid Cup include Travis Logie, CJ Hobgood, Bede Durbidge, Adrian Buchan, Kai Otton, Laura Enever and Tom Whitaker.
The chairman of WA SurfAid Ambassadors, Lyle Banks, said the SurfAid Cup Margaret River has raised nearly $140,000 for SurfAid since the first event in 2012.
“The event continues to grow, with eight teams vying not only for the surfing trophy but also the fundraising trophy,” Banks said.
“It’s a great event to be part of, with a bunch of highly competitive people having fun surfing with their mates and a pro/legend surfer – even the Best Wipeout Award is sought after. “
Banks said many of this year’s teams are back for a second and third time. “CineAds is aiming to win its third SurfAid Cup in a row, as well as hoping to be the first team to win both the surfing trophy and the fundraising trophy.
“There will be an added dimension this year of being part of the ASP World Championship Tour and having bigger crowds, and I’m sure all the SurfAid Cup surfers will charge even harder,” he said.
