ACC Chief Executive Scott Pickering is encouraging Kiwis to take advantage of the free coverage of the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games in Russia, which will be streamed live on AttitudeLive.com, starting this Saturday.

ACC is supporting Attitude Pictures Ltd to provide the live Games coverage via its innovative new web platform.

“We’re pleased to help Kiwis see our Paralympians in action, so they can celebrate their athletic skill and see first-hand the huge role that activity and sport can play in rehabilitation.”

Paralympian Corey Peters is one Kiwi who hasn’t let injury get in the way of achieving his dreams.

Corey, a former promising rugby player who was paralysed in a motocross crash in 2009, has since gone on to achieve great heights in his new sport of alpine ski racing.

“We wish Corey and fellow Paralympians, skier Adam Hall and snowboard cross athlete Carl Murphy, all the best in their respective events. I’m really looking forward to the live action on AttitudeLive.com, as well as the other coverage which will include background items and insightful, inspiring documentaries.”

Mr Pickering says although there can be many challenges participating in sports and physical activity after a serious injury, research shows the benefits of doing so can be significant.

“As our Paralympians show, serious injuries such as spinal injuries and limb amputations needn’t be a barrier to playing sport and achieving your goals.”

ACC can help clients take part in sport and recreational activity that’s linked to their individual rehabilitation plan, and can consider supporting other sporting and recreational activity for seriously injured clients on a case by case basis.

AttitudeLive producer and presenter Dan Buckingham is another Kiwi for whom sport played a critical role in helping him recover from a serious injury.

“As a Paralympian myself, I’m proud to be hosting this coverage. ACC helped me get back into sport and life. And although it’s ten years this year since I won gold at the Athens Paralympics, it’s a feeling you never forget.”

Athlete Profiles

Corey Peters
Competitive disciplines: Sit-Ski - Slalom, Super-G, Giant Slalom.
This will be the first Paralympic Games for Corey, who only took up sit-skiing three years ago. Following a motocross accident in 2009 which left him paralysed, Corey has made a remarkable comeback to competitive sport. The Sochi 2014 Paralympics will allow this up-and-coming skier to test himself against the world’s best.

Carl Murphy
Competitive discipline: Snowboard Cross
With para-snowboarding events included in the Paralympic programme for the first time in 2014, Carl Murphy will have his first taste of this pinnacle event. Carl finished the 2013 season ranked number one in the world and is gunning for a podium spot at the Sochi 2014 Paralympics.

Adam Hall
Competitive disciplines: Standing Ski - Slalom, Super-G, Super Combined
Adam has twice represented New Zealand at the Paralympic Winter Games - in Italy and Canada - taking the gold medal in standing slalom at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Paralympics. He is one hundred percent focused on defending his title in 2014.
