Enjoy a Weekend Wellington-style
As Wellington Fashion Week returns to the capital for its third year this April, it’s the perfect time to fill your day with retail therapy, and your suitcase with beautiful new things, on a weekend getaway Wellington-style.
Fashion forward
Experience high-fashion runway shows, jewellery exhibitions, beauty events and a fashion-themed outdoor movie night at this year’s Wellington Fashion Week (WFW) from 9-13 April.
Centred at Shed 6 on Wellington’s waterfront, WFW will open with Moochi’s 2014 winter collection, which takes its cue from the Orient. Group collection showcases will hit the runway on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, followed by a Sunday afternoon showcase from Storm before World Couture’s closing show. Tickets are on sale now and start from just $29 - visit Ticketek.co.nz.
What’s in store?
In Wellington shopping is made simple thanks to the city’s compact city centre. Head to Lambton Quay, Willis Street, Wakefield Street and the Cuba Quarter for the best high street and vintage shopping in town. A visit to College Street is also worth the detour where you’ll find a great collection of boutiques, cafes and foodie heaven, Moore Wilson’s.
Be sure to stop by the new retail precinct on the corner of Lambton Quay and Featherston Street to sample a degustation of Grand Cru coffees in the Coffee Room at the new Nespresso Boutique. Just next door you can browse the stunning wares at Walker & Hall jewellers, pick up some treats at The Body Shop, dress to impress at Robyn Mathieson and more.
The new two-storey Glassons-Hallensteins flagship (312 Lambton Quay) is the mother of all flagships. The spacious, open-plan layout features high ceilings, industrial details and a great selection of fashion staples, including a corner for Glasson’s new edt. fashion range.
Speaking of flagships, the arrival of lululemon athletica (276 Lambton Quay) has yoga fans pounding the pavements in the direction of its new Wellington headquarters to pick up the latest in their range of bright, comfortable and fabulous sportswear.
Viviane in-vogue
After you’ve dropped the bags off, wind down with a visit to City Gallery Wellington. Viviane Sassen is a Dutch photographer whose work blends art, fashion and documentary to create enigmatic images of people that are both provocative and beautiful. Her exhibition Lexicon, shot in Africa, a continent she partly grew up in, runs from 22 March – 1 June and entry is free.
Welcome back for WOW
Before you know it it’ll be time to update the spring wardrobe and head to WOW®, the mesmerising extravaganza where fashion, design, light, sound, theatre and dance collide. Tickets to the 2014 season of the World of WearableArt Awards Show are now on sale. Weekend tickets to WOW sell out quickly – so get in fast or consider a mid-week visit; you’ll get the added bonus of being able to hunt out all the weeknight two-for-one cocktail and dining deals! Tickets start from $50.
