Treasure Hunt Art Giveaway
Keen scavengers should head down to the Christchurch Botanical Gardens this weekend, as a treasure hunt begins for $5000 worth of art.
As part of the RISE street art exhibition, CPIT is sponsoring the Great Art Giveaway this Saturday and Sunday. Original wood-block prints by New Zealand street artist Milton Springsteen will be up for grabs.
Canterbury Museum Director Anthony Wright expects there will be hundreds of participants in the CPIT Great Art Giveaway.
“A very special treasure hunt is taking place this weekend,” he says.
“36 tokens, about the size of a smartphone, will be hidden in the Botanic Gardens. If you’re lucky enough find a token, you can bring it into the Museum and exchange it for one original Milton Springsteen woodblock print at the CPIT Great Art Giveaway exhibit on Level 1.”
The extremely popular RISE street art exhibition, part of the Oi You festival of street art, has been running at the Canterbury Museum for the last few months.
CPIT Art and Design manager Bruce Russell says great street art uses exactly the same thinking and technical skills as more traditional art forms.
“It just puts them in a new context.”
Russell says the art and design courses at CPIT can equip students to create street art such as that seen in the exhibition.
"If people are looking around the museum at the Rise exhibit and they're thinking 'wow it would be great to be able to make stuff like this', well that kind of stuff is exactly what we teach.”
