Special guests at Highwic Plant Fair
Two very special guests will be attending this year’s Highwic Plant Fair (March 16) this year.
Lynda Hallinan – Editor at Large of New Zealand Gardener magazine, columnist and gardening blogger extraordinaire – will have a stall at this specialty event designed for keen
gardeners and plant collectors, and will give a free talk to people attending the Plant Fair. Lynda will also be selling
some of her plant stock and produce from her Hunua property.
Alexa Johnston – author of the iconic Ladies, A Plate series of books – will also attend the fair and will talk about the best fruits and veges to use as preserves and jams;
the subject of her most recent book – with personally autographed copies on sale.
“As well as these wonderfully entertaining and knowledgeable people, the Plant Fair will bring together a selected group
of small specialty growers and groups who will showcase all manner of special plant treasures of real interest to keen
gardeners and passionate plant collectors – including plants, bulbs, shrubs, trees, vegetables and flowers,” says the
Manager of Highwic, Cheryl Laurie.
“Most of these growers’ plants are not available at retail outlets so this is a great chance to find them all in one
place without having to drive for miles.”
Last year, one of the most popular items was slices of bright orange French market pumpkin, and Alan Clarke – ‘the
pumpkin man’ – will be back again with his seasonal produce.
“Last year’s fair was very well supported and we’re confident that this year’s event will be even bigger and better,”
says Cheryl.
Plants for sale will all be suitable for growing in the Auckland climate and would-be purchasers will have a chance to
speak first hand with a group of incredibly knowledgeable specialty growers such as Kellydale Nurseries selling rare
bulbs, Sandra Simpson who specialises in Clivias; Russell Hutton with his orchids, and other growers selling tropical
plants, bromeliads, tsillandias, rare perennials and more.
Some of the growers will also give short talks on their product including cultivation tips and new varieties. A great
pop-up café for those seeking refreshment will be available along with a plant crèche. People will also have ample
opportunity to view the beautiful gardens and the historic house Highwic, while the fair runs from 8.30am – 4pm.
Entrance to the Highwic Plant Fair will cost $10 per adult (including NZHPT members); children are free. Admission also gives entry to Highwic.
There is some parking available for elderly and disabled – just let Highwic staff know at the gate, otherwise
recommended parking options include parking at 277 or the Farmers carpark, with pedestrian entrance from Mortimer Pass.
