After a sell out exhibition at Thistle Hall Gallery in Feb.2014 Wellington based artist Don Smith ( Ngati Kahungunu / Ngati Porou ) has created a new work from found / painted glass that will be part of the group exhibition -WHAKAPAPA - opening atROAR Gallery, March 6,2014
TitledHONGI - breath of life .. the work recalls the Maori legend of the first earthly woman, Hineahuone. She was formed from clay by the creator god Tane, who then  breathed life into her nostrils.Te Ara  Encyclopedia of New Zealand
While the title of the work suggests a strong and empowering sentiment .. by casting the work in glass the artist portrays the fragility that is also inherent in this formal greeting.
Under instructions from the artist the work will be up for sale for the price of :$1,840.62 .. in commemoration of the date of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi.
Join us at ROAR! gallery near the corner of Vivian and Victoria Streets on theopening night5.30 – 7pm Thursday 6th March 2014to view the art on display, meet the artists and enjoy a glass of wine.
