2014 ICF Oceania Canoe Sprint Championship
Penrith, Sydney, Australia: 28 February - 2 March 2014
The New Zealand junior squad commences racing today in Sydney at the ICF Oceania Canoe Sprint Champs to contest the U18 division, along with independent Tim Waller from Bay of Plenty and Open Para paddler Scott Martlew with Coach Leigh Barker. The junior team, coached by Liz Thompson, comprises eight young paddlers selected from seven clubs around New Zealand.
• Britney Ford, Poverty Bay
• Briar McLeely, North Shore
• Bronwyn Larsen, Waitara
• Elise Legarth, Hawkes Bay
• Kurtis Imrie, Mana
• Toby Brooke, Wanganui
• Taris Harker, Bay of Plenty
• Quaid Thompson, Poverty Bay
These athletes are hot off some strong results at the recent NZ Canoe Sprint Championships held in Rotorua and are well prepared for the Australian competition they will face.
Kurtis Imrie had an exceptional NZ champs winning titles in both the U18 MK1 1000m and 200m so he is one to look out for as is Briar McLeely who mirrored these results in the women’s events.
Young Quaid Thompson, like his father Olympian Alan Thompson, is showing strength in the team boats and we’re looking forward to seeing him in the K4 with a strong crew in team-mates Toby Brooke, Taris Harker and Kurtis Imrie.
Para paddler Scott Martlew who has his sights set on the Rio Paralympics, will also front up against the best the Aussies have to offer in the Open Mens para events. The last time he competed at this event he blitzed the field winning all of his events by a good margin so we’re hoping to see good things again.
