Bach Musica Presents: St John Passion
[Updated 5/3/14: Unfortunately, Anna Pierard has had to pull out of our Bach St John Passion, being held at the Auckland Town Hall on 30 March 2014. Georgia Jamieson Emms is taking her place as Soprano. David Hamilton will be featuring as Tenor.]
Media Release 7 February 2014
Bach's St John Passion is a pillar of classical music which has attracted audiences world-wide for many centuries. It is full of drama contrasted by deeply moving melodies and harmonies. Music for the soul!
Our performance of Bach's St John Passion will be a historic event, as we will feature (most likely for the very first time ever in NZ) two authentic viola' d'amores (extra large Baroque violas used by Bach) and a viola da gamba in one of the arias.
One of the viola d'mores belongs to the Auckland University and was originally owned by the German composer Paul Hindemith. The performers are John Thomson & Sophia Acheson (viola d'amore) and Polly Sussex (viola da gamba).
Bach Musica NZ is one of New Zealand’s leading classical music ensembles, presenting a wide range of music from Baroque to 21st century. Its motto is “Music that touches the soul”.
