There are just a few spots left for volunteer roles at WOMAD.
A final countdown will be held tomorrow (Wed, February 19) to finalise the few vacancies that are left but these are
expected to be a handful of city host roles and a few in Zero Waste.
Taranaki Arts Festival volunteer manager David Liggett says there has been a fantastic uptake in volunteer roles this
year with nearly all positions taken.
“But with city hosts, we’ve had quite a few people from out of town apply and, really, we would prefer to have locals
with local knowledge about our city filling those roles,” he said.
City hosts work in town, answering any questions of visitors, directing people to places and generally assisting with
information about the city or festival.
Those who had applied from outside New Plymouth for city host roles would be offered positions in other areas to fill
gaps.
The other area with vacancies is in the recycling area of Shell-sponsored Zero Waste.
“Some people have the wrong impression about this work. They think it’s about picking up rubbish, or even mucking in and
sorting out rubbish. But it’s not that. Really, it’s about helping the public sort rubbish into various recycling bins
that we have on site so that the optimum amount of recycling can occur at WOMAD. Our goal is to have zero waste,” Mr
Liggett said.
“Those that have worked before in this area will tell you it is one of the most enjoyable roles – and what’s more, most
of the recycling areas are positioned in prime spots so that, while you are actually working, you get a grandstand view
of the action on stage.”
Some of the roles in Zero Waste include supervisors, manning rubbish recycling in the food court area and back stage,
along with night workers who help ensure bins are emptied and ready for festival goers the next day.
Shifts in Zero Waste are for 6.5 hours and after that, people are free to enjoy the festival.
All volunteers are reimbursed the cost of a three-day pass at the end of their role.
