Teretonga Ready for Classic Speedfest

Classic motor racing returns to Teretonga Park in Invercargill this weekend (15/16 February) when the annual Evolution Motorsport Classic SpeedFest takes place.

As usual motor racing fans are in for a real treat with a great variety of classes containing some superb machinery.

Big saloons are always a crowd favourite and the Professionals Real Estate Classic Saloons (2501cc & over) has plenty of them. Regular visitor Jack Ondrack of Canada returns with his TVR Tuscan to compete in a field with three locals - Brendan Mason and Colin Dawson in Camaro's and Rodger Cunninghame in his Shelby Mustangs while the grid contains treasures such as Richard Quin's ex-Rodger Freeth Starlet, Jim Little's Valiant Charger and cars such as a Pontiac Firebird, a Holden Torana SLR 5000, a Torana GTR-XU1 and more.

Smaller saloons are catered for in the Southern Paints class where one of New Zealand's best saloon car exponents, Angus Fogg, will drive a Morris Cooper S. Fogg will also appear in the Jesco's Historic Touring Car races in a Jaguar XJS where he will race against Ford Sierra's, a Toyota Corona, a Mercedes Benz 190E and several BMW M3's including one driven by event sponsor Rick Michels of Evolution Motorsport.

The Macaulay Ford Formula Libre class sees the only Formula 5000 car entered this year, the McRae GM1 of Dunedin driver Steve Ross. Another Dunedin driver, Gary Cooper has entered in the ex-Craig Baird Reynard 92H while Jamie Conroy of Invercargill who has won thirteen of the fifteen races in the New Zealand Formula Ford Championship to date drives a Formula Renault. Away from the pressure of the national championship Conroy will also drive a Falcon Star car in the Noel McIntyre Drainage Clubmans Saloon races where Brian Scott of Dunedin (Chev Corvette), Invercargill youngster Liam MacDonald (NZV8 Falcon), Darryn Andrews of Lincoln in a turbocharged Nissan Primera and Brendan Mason of Invercargill in a Chev Camaro will be frontrunners along with Inky Tulloch in his turbocharged Honda Integra.

Canadian Ondrack will also race his TVR Tuscan in the Southland Tyre Centre Sports Car Class where he is up against competition such as Kerry Anderson in his Jaguar D Type Replica, the Rhubarb III of Dunedin driver Ralph Smith and several other famous marques. Meanwhile the Sievwright Auto's Vintage Racing Car Class will feature some superb machinery.

Pre-sales of tickets are available from Auto Centre, E Hayes & Sons and Jesco Hydraulics in Invercargill plus Harrison Supplies in Gore at a cost of $25 for a weekend pass with children 12 & under free. They are also available online at www.teretonga.org.nz

The action starts at 9am on both Saturday and Sunday.
