Tauranga fund-raiser a great night out to help Kiwi kids

A group of Tauranga mates with a love of classic cars and trucks have come up with a novel way to help Kiwi kids.

Gaming Inc. electronics technician Morris Danks and his partner, Andrea Berghan, will create a Boogie Wonderland in Tauranga on March 1 to raise funds for Variety – The Childrens Charity, which gives underprivileged or disabled kids the hand-up they need to hold their heads up high among their more fortunate peers.

The couple and their ‘8th Tribe’ team take a classic fire engine along on the regular Variety ‘Bash’ road rally, which distributes grants to rural kids and schools and this year will end up in Tauranga, on March 22.

But to do so they must commit to raising a certain amount for the charity.

“We’ve found these dress-up nights a great fund-raiser, Andrea says, “you just need a sense of humour and $5 to enter, otherwise it’s a great night out, having a laugh. The costumes break the ice so it’s a great way to meet new people and socialise and better yet, we’ve sourced a few prizes for the best-dressed and for the dance competition, so dig out your headbands and flares and come along!”

The couple had a great response to their first Boogie Wonderland event, and have tagged this one Boogie Wonderland 2.

The 1970s disco night, with DJ Big T playing 1970s music, will take place from 9pm onwards on Saturday, March 1 at Imbibe bar and restaurant, 19 Girven Road, Mt Manganui. Tickets can be bought through Imbibe or from the team’s facebook page, www.facebook.co.nz/bopfiretruck.

All proceeds will go to Variety – The Children’s Charity, and if the team raises enough the Tauranga-based ‘8th Tribe’ fire truck will join the cavalcade that will deliver cheques and equipment to rural schools come March.
