Irish soprano ‘Evelyne Bourton’ returns to Italy
Evelyne, a Taupiri based Irish native, is known for her vibrant and bubbly personality and has a deep love of music and
theatre.
Invited to perform again in Italy, Evelyne Bourton has a fundraiser and farewell performance onFebruary 28th at
Gallagher Concert Chamber, The University Of Waikato. Accompanied byRosemary Barnes, Andrew Leathwick (Piano), Sarah
Walker (Cello) and guests, March 2014 will see this gifted soprano return to Italy to perform, study, and work on
international collaborations and tours.
The concert on the 28th of February is to raise funds to continue her journey and will see her put her skills to the
test with accompanist Rosemary Barnes. The line up of guest artist and performers are impressive with Andrew Leathwick
on solo piano (a current ‘Sir Edmund Hillary Scholar’), Sarah Walker nee McDowall on Cello (Masters at the Royal College
in London) and interval entertainment from the Martini’s a jazzy musical ensemble, not to mention a vibrant Circus
Performance.
"We remember with great pleasure the concert performed in Taormina and success it has had" Il Presidente Teresa Salvato
form the Associazione Musicale Almoetia Citta Di Toarmina. President of The Association of Music Taormina
At the age of 12 and not long in New Zealand, it was becoming apparent to family, friends and schoolteachers that
Evelyne had a real talent for singing. She began lessons with Audrey Paterson, a local singing teacher and quickly took
part in competitions, shows and school performances with much success. Evelyne later moved on to tertiary studies even
though she has long struggled with dyslexia. She gained a first class honors degree in music and post-graduate dip in
linguistics and was also a recipient of the ‘Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship’.
Having started her own NZ based Opera Company “Opera Unleashed”, Evelyne created a premier production of the Mozart
opera ‘La Finta Giardinera’ in English. Whilst Evelyne was teaching at the ’Major n Minors’ school in Pukekohe, they put
together a recording and sent it to Italy which gained her a place in the 2011 ‘Scuola Italia’ - Belcanto course. Under
the guise of her new teacher, William Matteuzzi in a Master Class, she has enriched her skills and connections in the
Italian music scene.
Originally mystified as to where her deep love of Opera came from, Evelyne reconnected with her extended Irish family
and found there is a long line to the arts with singers, composers, painters & actors in her family. Following the loss of her father to cancer, Evelyne returned home to Ireland. Her reconnection
with her homeland has also awakened a passion for Celtic music and this year will see her making exciting developments
in this area also.
