Outer space and the Topp Twins collide at ASB Classical Sparks
Prepare for a symphony of sparkles, space and stars – two of the funniest in New Zealand, in fact – as the ASB Classical
Sparks returns to North Hagley Park at 7.30pm on Saturday 1 February.
The Christchurch Symphony Orchestra will be joined by New Zealand’s own ‘Queens of Comedy’, the Topp Twins, for an
evening packed with belly laughs and beautiful music, culminating in the type of spectacular fireworks extravaganza that
ASB Classical Sparks has become renowned for.
Paul Kean, Christchurch City Council Events Business Coordinator, says the night will present a varied programme for all
ages and tastes.
“As ASB Classical Sparks aficionados will expect, the music and musicianship will be first rate. This year’s concert is
designed as a musical journey into outer space. Conductor Kenneth Young will lead the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra
through Strauss’ Blue Danube Waltz as featured in 2001: A Space Odyssey, as well as other orchestral pieces such as the
theme from The Onedin Line and Strauss’ Thunder and Lightning Polka.
“The big finale will feature John Williams’ epic Star Wars theme as the backdrop to the fireworks display,” he says. “To
stop everything getting too cosmic, we invited the Topp Twins to bring things back down to earth with some Kiwi humour.”
Donations to The Order of St John – ASB’s chosen charity – will be collected during the event to assist with the
ambulance and other community services they provide.
