In response to the RNZSPCA press release today, Housing New Zealand has informed us that there has been no change in
HNZ policy regarding dogs
During discussions, they assured Ric Odom, CEO RNZSPCA, that while tenants are generally discouraged from having dogs,
Housing New Zealand approaches each situation on a case-by-case basis, considering things like the suitability of the
property and the needs of the tenant.
"Housing New Zealand recognises that dogs play an important part in many people's lives and will always try to approach
each case sensitively and with compassion. They would always grant permission for guide dogs and disability assist dogs,
or where a dog is seen as being important to therapy for mental illness or other chronic health condition."
While the SPCA do believe tenants should be expected to honour their agreements and appreciate the clarification from
HNZ, with such a high number of HNZ tenants owning dogs, we remain concerned for these tenants and their pets. However
we do place responsibility on dog owners to look after and control their dog to prevent damage or problems.
