Samantha Hayes is joining Duncan Garner to co-host of 3rd Degree when the in-depth current affairs programme returns soon on TV3.
Director of News and Current Affairs, Mark Jennings says: “Feedback from viewers last year was very positive on having dual presenters. Guyon Espiner and Duncan Garner brought contrasting styles and different points of view to the programme and Samantha Hayes will undoubtedly bring her own unique style too.
“Samantha has considerable presenting experience and this will be valuable as we continue to evolve a programme that broke some of the country’s biggest stories in its first year on-air.“
3rd Degree is a weekly one-hour programme featuring stories from some of New Zealand’s top journalists, including Paula Penfold, Melanie Reid, Sarah Hall, Phil Vine, Duncan Garner and Samantha Hayes. Major stories in 2013 included Paula Penfold and Eugene Bingham’s Teina Pora investigation, and new revelations in the David Bain case from Melanie Reid.
Samantha Hayes has worked as a journalist and presenter for TV3’s News and Current Affairs Division since 2006, most recently as a journalist for 3rd Degree and back-up anchor for Firstline. Samantha is well known to TV3 viewers as a former Nightline presenter, and for her work as a journalist for 3 News, which included covering Arts and Entertainment, the Environment, and a stint as the 3 News Australian Correspondent.
Duncan Garner is one of New Zealand’s most experienced journalists. He spent 17 years in the gallery, including five years as Political Editor for TV3, and is a former co-host of The Nation and The Vote. Along with Guyon Espiner, Duncan co-hosted the inaugural year of 3rdDegree. His work has been recognised with awards including Television Journalist of the Year and Best News Reporting. He hosts the RadioLIVE Drive show.
