A contemporary perspective of the past set to quintessential Kiwi pop-anthems arranged by a Silver Scroll winner. This is a modern take on the classic theme of romance, inspired by real life as Rochelle Bright’s homage to her mother and father, Daffodils, premieres at Q Theatre from March 13th.

Rose was 16. Eric, 18. They met at the lake by the daffodils. The same place that Eric’s parents met 20 years earlier. Was it destiny? Perhaps. But what happens after years of misread moments, too many maybes and unspoken thoughts that never go away?

Inspired by private letters, real interviews and family myths heard only at garage piss ups, Daffodils is a slice of NYC cabaret in Auckland’s CBD. The production takes audiences through landscapes of live music and heart-aching theatre grounded by a series of 1960’s Kodak stills, Super8 home movies and fashion photography.

The boutique charm of Daffodils stems from the live “mix-tape” of New Zealand songs that capture the nuances of Rose and Eric’s life. Carefully arranged by Silver Scroll winner Stephanie Brown (LIPS), audiences are treated to iconic works by Chris Knox, Crowded House, Dave Dobbyn, Darcy Clay, The Exponents, The Mutton Birds, Blam Blam Blam, Bic Runga, Th’Dudes, The Senators, The Swingers and The Mint Chicks.

Todd Emerson (The Pitchfork Disney, Songs for Guy) and Colleen Davis (Chicago, The Almighty Johnsons ) bring Eric and Rose to life, leading the audience through this bittersweet tale, pushing themselves to new limits as they perform the songs alongside Brown and Abraham Kunin (The Means). Set to an incredible multi-media backdrop designed by fashion photographer and director Garth Badger (REMIX Magazine, Lorde, Kimbra), the projection is a hyper-realistic vintage MTV music video that unfolds in front of the audience.

With direction from award-winning director Dena Kennedy (Sunday Roast) and exquisite lighting from Jane Hakaraia (Brel), this unique Kiwi tale from playwright Rochelle Bright is more indie gig than musical – and a redefinition of “cabaret”.

Daffodils is the first production to feature in the 2014 Season of Q Presents at Q Theatre, a curated partnership programme for the next wave of performing arts companies who are poised to make a big impact on the Auckland arts scene.
