Wet weather expected in Waikato and Bay of Plenty region

The NZ Transport Agency is urging motorists travelling around the Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions to take care as heavy rain is expected to descend in the area today and tomorrow.

The Transport Agency says drivers need to take extreme care as roads surfaces can be very slippery after a long dry spell.

Throughout the recent dry spell, dust, dirt, oil and other debris builds up on the road surface and when it rains, it can make driving conditions slippery and dangerous. Conditions are at the worst in the first few hours of rain, and light rain is more of a challenge than a heavy downpour says the Transport Agency.

In poor weather drivers need to change their driving and respect the conditions. That means reducing your speed below the legal limit and increasing following distances as vehicles need two to three times more stopping distance in wet weather and to take it easy on corners.

Also before heading out on the road, the Transport Agency advises drivers to check the latest highway conditions and check the traffic cams online so you’re armed with the best information to help you on your journey.

The Transport Agency’s website is regularly updated with information about most delays, closures and detours at www.nzta.govt.nz/traffic.

People can also call the Transport Agency's free phone on 0800 4HIGHWAYS (0800 44 44 49), which can also be used to report any significant road issues or hazards which people may come across during their travels.

Alternatively, drivers can also subscribe to On The Move a free service which enables provides up to date information about crashes, road works and driving conditions on their frequently used routes - to sign up, go to www.onthemove.govt.nz.
