Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the theatre...
Charlie and Lucy just want a quiet night in watching scary movies. Well, they get the night and they get the scary...
Before long one is missing and the other has no choice but to search through a deep dark night for their friend. Along the way they'll encounter monsters, cults and killers. They just wanted to watch scary movies. Seems like they're stuck inside them instead and from where they're standing it looks like there's no way out.
The acclaimed young Wellington theatre company that brought you the sell-out sensations Joseph K and A Play About Space, won Best Theatre at the Dunedin Fringe, Best Design at Wellington Fringe, and were nominated for a jaw-dropping seven Chapman Tripps in 2013, is making their Circa debut and bringing in the Fringe in this thrilling roller-coaster ride through the fun of fear. Part of the 2014 Wellington Fringe Festival, A Play About Fear promises cheap tickets at $18/$14, big laughs and evil from the dawn of time.
How do you follow two of the biggest Wellington theatre successes of last year? “We follow it with more! With bigger!” says writer/director Uther Dean, “We spent 2013 showing Wellingtonians how good a time they could have at the theatre and they responded in droves so, well, now the gloves have to come off. No more Mister Nice Theatre Company.
“In Fear, we're turning everything up to 11. More action, more jokes, more fun, more joy. More blood. We're gonna blow the roof off Circa Two and everyone's gonna love it."
In the sell-out sensation, critically acclaimed A Play About Space, My Accomplice made a show out of every scifi film you've ever loved. With A Play About Fear they're back for the horror and thriller genre, taking all your favourites from Evil Dead 2 to Scream and looking at them through their trademark low-fi high-energy wonderfully theatrical style.
It stars Hannah Banks (Death and the Dreamlife of Elephants), Sam Hallahan (Madam X and Mister Q ), Kate Clarkin (Broken River), and Chapman Tripp winners Paul Waggott (Red and Tribes) and Alex Greig (Coriolanus and No Naughty Bits). My Accomplice have assembled a crack team of Wellington’s most exciting young theatre makers to bring the very best of Fringe madness up the levels of polish and precision that a Circa-goer demands. So in A Play About Fear expect the best of both worlds. Except both worlds happen to also be hell dimensions. Expect chills! Demand thrills! This will be a hilarious hour of non-stop theatrical invention.
The critics have raved about their previous work:
“Comic genius” — Theatreview.
“A lively theatrical imagination” — The Dominion Post.
“Thought-provoking, must-see theatre” — Wordonthestreet.co.nz.
