Demigod/half-Human: Award-Winning, “Must-See” Choreography

Media Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AWARD-WINNING, “MUST-SEE” CHOREOGRAPHY TOURS NZ FRINGE FESTIVAL

Shani Dickins (Auckland) presents

Demigod/half-Human

BATS Theatre, 20th - 23rd February 2014

A haunting, revealing and provocative new choreography about temptation, transformation and human desire.

Play human.

Avoid taboo.

Shed the primordial skin.

Fellow Homo sapiens, your success depends on a civilised appearance.

You know the rules.

With the extremes of heaven above and hell beneath, your duty is to act the in-between: human, orderly.

The fact is, our bodies and minds are degenerating.

Caged perpetually in an ignorant, insane society, we refuse to acknowledge the most honest self: the tired, hungry, lust-ridden flesh.

So the insatiable predator becomes dependent on his prey; the exhausted prey dependent on her manipulator.

Following two successful 2013 seasons at Christchurch’s Body Festival and Hamilton Fringe Festival, Auckland choreographer Shani Dickins presents a dark, visceral and “very, very scary” story of temptation, power and disguise.

Bold imagery is employed throughout, referencing the fall of Eve in the Garden of Eden, the female demon Lilith and the conflicted inner struggle that our humanness causes.

Winner of the Wallace Arts Emerging Artist Award at Auckland’s 2013 Short + Sweet Dance Festival, Demigod/half-Human features original compositions by James Risbey, costume design by Fraser Mildon and lighting design by Ruby Reihana-Wilson.

“… so full of the confronting, the unexpected and the taboo … alien meets exorcist, in an Hieronymus Bosch garden of earthly delights and horrors."

“Make no mistake. These women can dance."
