ETEC starts 2014 Toyota Racing Series solidly at Teretonga Park Raceway

ETEC Motorsport got its 2014 Toyota Racing Series (TRS) campaign off to a solid start at Teretonga Park Raceway last weekend (9-12 January).

The opening three races of the 2014 TRS season were challenging for the 23-strong field, with two held in warm, dry conditions and one in driving rain.

Bleak weather conditions tested the ETEC Motorsport contingents’ resolve during free practice and qualifying, although the squally showers cleared away in time for the opening race of the weekend.

Australian hotshot Jordan Oon led ETEC’s charge in Round 1 on Saturday (11 January), sealing a deserved podium finish in a race that featured a late Safety Car intervention and was truncated by a red-flag stoppage two laps from the end, after Oon’s ETEC stable mate Martin Kodric had an off-track excursion.

Oon, aged 23 from Perth in Western Australia, overcame wet conditions to finish sixth in Round 2, but was unfortunate to cross the line in 19th during the weekend’s final race on Sunday (12 January).

Russian hotshot Denis Korneev was super-consistent on his TRS debut, conquering vastly differing weather and track conditions to notch up a brace of fifth-place results and a ninth.

Korneev’s fellow countryman Matevos Isaakyan rounded-out the top eight in the opening two contests at Teretonga Park, but rose to sixth in the third race.

Kodric, meanwhile, recovered well from his race one DNF to finish Round 2 within sight of the top ten in 12th position, before slipping down to 17th in Round 3 – the Spirit of the Nation feature race – on Sunday afternoon.

ETEC Motorsport team boss, Trevor Scheumack, said: “The opening round of the 2014 Toyota Racing Series at Teretonga Park proved that I was right to have faith in ETEC Motorsport’s drivers. The changeable weather and track conditions made the going tough for all concerned but all four drivers rose to the challenge, which fills me with hope for the rest of the season.

"Their consistency and maturity is very impressive and there’s a lot of potential to build upon. It promises to be an exciting and fruitful campaign in the TRS and I’m looking forward to Timaru next weekend.”

The 2014 Toyota Racing Series (TRS) resumes at Timaru International Raceway (16-19 January).
