NZ at world arts summit

NZ at world arts summit

The Big Idea executive director Elisabeth Vaneveld is one of three New Zealand arts leaders speaking at the 6th World Summit on Arts & Culture.

The theme of the summit, in Chile from January 13 to 16, is 'Creative Times: new models for cultural development'.
Arts leaders and cultural policy makers from around the world will consider the impact of:

Significant geo-political, financial and environmental changes, both globally and locally, that have occurred in recent years on arts and cultural development. In many cases, the impact of these is still unfolding.

Rapidly changing definitions of arts, culture, creativity, industry and cultural policy as each are in a state of flux in a fast-changing sector.
Elisabeth's presentation is in a plenary session that considers, 'Creative platforms for rethinking industry'.

It starts with a provocation - that the arts are not yet sufficiently valued in the mainstream of business, politics, governance and policy-making - and the transformational role of arts-led creativity is under-valued, under-used and often under-ground.

Her talk describes how in New Zealand we have addressed two questions:

How can we make the value that talented creative people working in the arts offer more visible?

How might that value be integrated with pride into the day-to-day lives of everybody?
Elisabeth will show how both The Big Idea and the ART Venture programme are playing their part in our collective search for answers. She also introduces a way of re-thinking industry, using a creative ecology model that is being developed in Auckland by the Creative Coalition.

She advocates breaking down silo thinking - both between the ears and also in wider realms for example within organisations, disciplines and fields – so that a much broader range of opportunities, networks and connections can be made for the benefit everyone working in the arts.

Elisabeth Vaneveld is presenting as one of four panel members in the session 'Creative platforms for rethinking industry' on Wednesday January 15 at 10.30am local time (Thursday January 16 at 2.30am NZT). This session will be live streamed.
