Fly Me to the Moon
Getting you closer to the moon is what the next few months are all about at Carter Observatory. Every planetarium show
will feature a live section about the moon - stories, features, Apollo missions - so get your moonboots on! And we've
got some great new, special one-off events over the next few weeks.
Celebrate Wellington Anniversary Day 20 January by gazing at the sun through solar telescopes at Carter thanks to the
Wellington Astronomical Society and your gold coin donation. Then book a romantic live planetarium show for Valentines
Day, couples only! Learn all about the lovers that can be found in the stories of the sky, from traditional Māori myths
to the lovers of Zeus. Whilst you enjoy the show, eat, drink and be merry with a personal basket of treats to share with
your loved one.
Capital Harmony Chorus, a Wellington based acapella female barber shop group, will be performing a mixture of classic,
parodies and easy listening songs all under a magical moving planetarium sky on the afternoon of Sunday 16 February. And
during that same week the Thomas King Observatory will feature Madame Blavatsky and the Astral Light – a special show in
association with The Fringe Festival.
Sunday 23 February is Carter’s Tilt Family Fun Day! Tilt is a new planetarium show especially for younger children.
There’ll be hourly screenings, face painting, kite making, gallery trails, bubble blowing and it’s half price for
children and adults all day!
The staff at Carter are surreptitiously excited about a brilliant secret show coming up in association with the New
Zealand Festival’s Writers Week on Sunday 9 March. This luminous event involving three stars of the literary world will
be announced 30 January at the launch of Writers Week 2014. Keep an eye on the NZ Festival and Carter’s websites for
details.
And finally, Apollo 13 will feature at the Lighthouse Cinema Cuba as part of Carter’s Astronomy Box Fundraiser on 20
March. Every ticket sold will go towards funding a new outreach programme for schools.
