Sceptre Theatre Presents:
Horatio
Be a part of an original Shakespearean work, written & performed right here in Wellington.
Witness William Shakespeare’s Hamlet collide with his trademark themes and characters, shaped by a modern perspective, but still dipped in the rich language of the Bard himself.
“Draw thy breath in pain to tell my story."
So said Hamlet unto Horatio as he slowly passed away into the undiscovered country. Now Horatio has to deal with his new king Fortinbras and find a way to sum up Hamlet with nothing but his own words. How does one show the true character and life of a man? Did Horatio really even know the guy? He spent more time talking to himself than he ever did to his best friend.
And now there is someone new whispering in his ear… Using effective and dynamic design a unique landscape will be created for our Horatio to strut and fret his hour upon the stage. While still taking our cues from Elizabethan theatre and Shakespeare’s tragedies, Horatio will work to explore new ideas whilst still remaining recognisable and placed within Shakespeare’s world.
Horatio is a clever, accessible and relevant reimagining of literature’s most enduring tortured prince and the aftermath of his death. It is, in essence, a love letter to the Bard.
Sceptre Theatre has a deep passion to perform classic texts and new texts that are inspired and influenced by those classics. Sceptre Theatre’s main drive is to recognise and pay homage to these texts by staging them with originality and immediacy that will inspire and affect a modern audience.
Horatio is directed by James Cain and stars Jed Davies, Miryam Jacobi & James Cain.
