Tickets on Sale for Teretonga
Tickets are on sale for one of Southland's biggest motor racing events - the Motorsport NZ Summer Series meeting over the weekend of 11/12 January.
The series annual visit to Teretonga will be headlined by the Toyota Racing Series and the NZV8 Touring Cars.
Once again the Toyota Racing Series will bring a talented international field to Teretonga with the first of the teams making their driver announcements recently. Already drivers from Brazil, Russia, Switzerland, the United States, the UK, Australia and Singapore have been confirmed along with several kiwi's. One of the more excting announcements concerns the fact that 15 year old Pedro Piquet will be racing for the current series title holders M2 Competiiton. Travelling with Pedro will be his father, three-time World Champion Nelson Piquet. Piquet, who won his titles in 1981, 1983 and 1987, will be the second Formula 1 World Champion to come to Teretonga in recent years after Damon Hill accompanied his son Josh on his first appearance at Teretonga in 2011. While it is a very talented international field two locals, brothers Damon and Brendon Leitch, will also be on the grid.
The NZV8 Touring Cars had their opening round at Pukekohe last month and former Australian V8 Supercar star Jason Bargwanna and Cambridge driver Nick Ross had a furious battle for honours. Bargwanna has stepped into one of the two Toyota Camry's this season alongside team mate AJ Lauder of Turua while Ross pilots a Holden Commodore. The frontrunners compete in the state of the art TLX cars while there is a separate championship for the older TL cars in which two Southlanders,Liam MacDonald and Grant Molloy will compete.
It is a Southlander who leads the New Zealand Formula Ford Championship as it comes south with Jamie Conroy at the top of the points after one round. Meanwhile another Invercargill driver, Steve Heffernan, leads Class 2.
Sports and Production GT, NZ6 Saloons and rally cars complete the programme.
Tickets are available from the i-site Invercargill, Auto Centre at 105 Tweed Street Invercargill and E Hayes & Sons at 168 Dee Street Invercargillor online atnzracechamps.org.nz or by phone at 0800 327 484.
