‘Tis The Season To Give

It is that time of year when the Presbyterian Support Northern (PSN) Foodbank resembles Santa’s Workshop.

December is one of the busiest months for PSN Foodbank, with over 300 food parcel requests.

“On a regular day during the year, I pack about eight to 10 food parcels but in December the requests increase to around 45 on average” says Miles Ostick, Foodbank Co-ordinator.

“Recently, a mother was referred to PSN Foodbank after she found herself unwanted by her partner. She, along with her baby and two twin daughters, was delivered a food parcel while waiting for emergency accommodation” says Miles.

Unfortunately situations like this are not uncommon – donations are needed at the PSN Foodbank to deliver promptly to serious requests.

“It’s all about responding to urgent needs” comments Maureen Little, Service Manager, Budgeting Service and Foodbank. “Having Foodbank resources to hand means taking appropriate action.”

The number of requests received from families supported through Family Works, the children and families division of Presbyterian Support Northern has also increased.

“Come early 2014, after the rush of Christmas, we will need to replenish emergency food supplies so that we can have adequate stock to support families in need,” says Maureen.

The Holiday season is an opportunity to give – donations make a big difference for those who need it. To donate to the PSN Foodbank, contact (09) 838 1426 or 027 563 1026 or drop items off for the New Year demand from 13 January, Monday to Fridays from 9am to 12 noon at St David’s Presbyterian Church in Grafton, Auckland.
