Christmas billboard portrays God’s ‘selfie’

“If God took a selfie – a self-portrait – what would it look like?”

This is the question Glynn Cardy, minister of St Luke’s Presbyterian Church in Remuera, asks with a new Christmas billboard.

Cardy continues, “Would God’s selfie portray someone who is popular, or presidential, or works out a lot? Nope. God’s selfie is of a baby, born poor. What on earth does that mean? This is the riddle of Christmas.”

Cardy, formerly the minister of St Matthew-in-the-City, is well-known for creating discussion with billboards.

He says that, “Such billboards are designed to make people think about and debate the meaning of Christmas. They are not about telling or even inviting people to go to church.”

‘Selfie’ was the Oxford Dictionary’s word of the year for 2013, and is associated with taking a self-portrait with a cell phone.

“This ‘Divine selfie’ billboard can invite us to think about God being an energy, ready to be ignited by love, within every newborn baby. We encounter God in each other as human beings.

“The message of Christmas is that we are not members of the human race but members of the human family – and God is known in the midst of that family.”
