Kiwis set to play outside this Christmas

New Zealanders will be unwrapping presents and heading outside to play this Christmas if Trade Me’s annual list of top searches is anything to go by.

Trade Me spokesman Paul Ford said six of the nation’s most searched Christmas ideas on the online marketplace had an outdoor flavour. “Popular high energy gift options include mountain bikes and trampolines, and Adidas clothing has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity to land at number two.

“There are also more sedate outdoor items in the top ten with golf gear making the list for the first time, together with outdoor furniture and BBQs.”

Apple’s range of tasty technology products remained in the top spot for the third consecutive year. “In 2013 it is all about about iPhones and iPads, with the iPod Touch slipping down the most coveted list this year,” Mr Ford said.

On the Christmas toy front, iconic Lego and Star Wars toys continue to capture the imagination and were a “foolproof” gift option. “Both toy brands have reinvented themselves and appeal to parents and kids alike,” Mr Ford said.

“Both also present a potential buyer with an absolutely humungous range of products to choose from. For example on Trade Me there are 4000 new listings for Star Wars paraphernalia and more than 5000 new Lego items up for sale.”

Trade Me’s online marketplace experiences a traditional boom in site activity in the lead-in to Christmas. According to Nielsen Online, more than 700,000 domestic unique browsers have visited the site each day in December.

Mr Ford said “couch commerce” had exploded this year, with Kiwi online shoppers increasingly reliant on tablets and mobile devices. “Purchasing expectations are now a case of anything, anytime, anywhere. We see this reflected in the proportion of mobile usage now hovering at around 45 per cent of all Trade Me’s site visits across our platforms.”
