Voting Begins In the Igloo® Flicks.co.nz 2014 People’s Choice Movie Awards
It’s that time of year again! Off the back of the success of last year’s awards, Flicks.co.nz has launched the only New
Zealand-based People’s Choice Movie Awards for the second year running and this year they’ve teamed up with IGLOO® who
are passionate movie buffs too!
Voting is underway across the whopping 20 categories, expanding from last year’s public-voted awards. The upgraded 2014
edition will let the people of New Zealand bestow recognition on their favourite films of 2013.
The nominees will compete for awards across a range of genres and variety of performances, before scrapping it out for
our fine nation’s most sought-after award – Movie of the Year.

A massive 60-plus films are in contention for awards, with categories recognising everything from Best NZ Film to Best
Couple. Quentin Tarantino’s Western masterpiece Django Unchained leads the field with nominations in five different categories, while the thrilling Gravity and delightful Silver Linings Playbook are just behind with four apiece. Of this year’s great batch of New Zealand films, Mt Everest documentary Beyond the Edge and ‘80s coming-of-age drama Shopping jointly lead the nominations, with three each.
Interestingly, in the Hero of the Year category, women outnumber men – and a couple of iconic New Zealanders young and
old make an unexpected appearance in the nominations. Smaug, the dragon from Sir Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (also nominated for Best Fantasy), could take home the Biggest Bastard award while Sir Edmund Hillary is in contention
for Hero of the Year thanks to Beyond the Edge.
“As we sat down to shortlist the top films of the year it quickly became apparent how many great movie-watching
experiences were on offer,” says Flicks.co.nz Editor Steve Newall. “It’s a compliment to the year’s crop of movies that
we found it hard to agree on the nominees, let alone our favourites within each category. I welcome Kiwis helping us
decide – and if they don’t see eye-to-eye with the nominees we’ve chosen, they can vote for any film that opened in NZ
cinemas during 2013.”
“We’re rapt to be involved with the People’s Choice Movie Awards this year” says IGLOO® General Manager David Joyce. “At
IGLOO® we’re huge movie fans and we have more than a few favourites of 2013 in our lineup and on IGLOO®. It’ll be
interesting to see who will come out on top! It’s great to see my personal favourite Iron Man 3 in contention for the Best Action award.”
The award winners are decided by public vote at www.flicks.co.nz/awards from December 16th to January 10th, with the results announced shortly after as the international award season is
heating up.
Everyone who votes goes in the draw to win a SONY Full HD TV, a stack of great films from Madman and 50 double passes
provided as consolation prizes by Hoyts.
