Seminar on Brazilian Indigenous and Maori Cultures
The Embassy of Brazil in Wellington has the pleasure to invite you to the Seminar “Brazilian Indigenous and Maori Cultures”, which will take place on Wednesday, 11 December, from 5 pm.
The Seminar will be based on the publication “Textos do Brazil 19: Culturas Indígenas”, which has been translated into English and Maori under the initiative of the Embassy and the Cultural Department of the Brazilian Ministry of External Relations. The bilingual title “Ngā Kupu nō Parihi 19: Ngā Ahurea Iwi Taketake/Texts from Brazil 19: Indigenous People” will be launched in a private event at Te Papa.
This project values Te Reo Māori as one of New Zealand’s official languages and also aims at contributing to a better knowledge about – and eventually interaction between - the indigenous native communities of Brazil and Aotearoa.
The public will have the opportunity of checking the publication during the seminar, which will include a special presentation by Marta do Amaral Azevedo, Anthropologist and Demographer from the University of Campinas (Unicamp), formerly the president of Funai (National Indian Foundation) - the Brazilian government body that establishes and carries out policies relating to indigenous peoples.
The topics that will be discussed and compared between the indigenous communities of both countries include: demographic distribution of indigenous people, cosmology, religion, cuisine, architecture, cinema, languages, ethnicity, body painting and music.
The seminar schedule is available on our website www.brazil.org.nz and will be periodically updated until the day of the event.
