Dunedin Libraries Are Taking You Places This Summer
Dunedin, 3 December 2013 – You don’t have to travel to go places this summer.
Let books take you to different destinations when the Dunedin Public Libraries’ Summer Reading Programme starts again on Saturday 14 December. The theme this year is ‘Taking You Places’, and books certainly have the power to transport young minds and open up endless imaginary possibilities.
The libraries have teamed up with Toitū Otago Settlers Museum and the University Book Shop, in an activity-packed programme to keep kids’ brains challenged this summer.
Research has shown that children can lose a significant proportion of their reading skills if they do not maintain the reading habit during the long school holidays. Children who read books over the holiday season sustain, or can even improve, their reading level. This gives them a head start for the new school year.
The Dunedin Libraries’ Summer Reading Programme attracts more than 700 children each year, making it one of the most popular holiday programmes in Dunedin. To sign up to the challenge, children need to register at any Dunedin Library and commit to reading at least five books.
Every child who signs up will receive a ‘Taking You Places’ booklet so they can keep a record of their achievements. It is free to join and there are prizes for every child who reaches or exceeds the reading goal they have set themselves and returns the booklet by 26 January. The goal could be five books or 55, the choice is theirs. At the end of the summer, those who have met their target will be invited to a prizegiving at their local library.
While the Programme is designed to help children maintain their skills, the emphasis is on the joy of reading and having fun. The booklet this year contains a bumper crop of puzzles, jokes and quizzes.
