Book celebrates The New Invincibles

Renowned sports author Ron Palenski began to write the conclusion of his new book at a crucial moment in sporting history.

It was as Aaron Cruden’s second attempt to convert what might well be one of the All Blacks most important tries of all time flew through the posts.

It’s been years since the All Blacks achieved a perfect season and Palenski’s chronicle of this new piece of history called The New Invincibles details every crucial moment. The book is available in Whitcoulls book stores from today (November 29) for $19.99.

“It was not until after the England test when we decided the book must go ahead,” Palenski says. “It’s been an amazing season and this 2013 All Blacks team will go down in history. They really are the New Invincibles.”

The All Blacks won all 14 tests this year making them the first team in the professional era to achieve the feat. The 1924 Invincibles played 32 games, including four tests, to also beat all comers.

The New Invincibles provides an editorial and statistical summary of all 14 tests and is complemented by stunning photography illustrating each game.

The book is printed in New Zealand and is the first title published by Upstart Press.

“It really is amazing to be a part of bringing to life the All Blacks’ perfect season of 2013. The New Invincibles is not only a debut title but a beautiful book which will appeal to so many Kiwis wanting a record of this team’s triumphant season,” says Upstart Press director Kevin Chapman.

Palenski is a historian and author and among the most recognised authorities on sport, especially rugby, in New Zealand. He is currently chief executive of the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame.
