Someone Else’s Country to Screen at the Film Archive
During the early 1980s, a group of rightwing economists quietly came to dominate policy development in the New Zealand Treasury.
With the election of the Labour Party in 1984 and the appointment of Roger Douglas as Minister of Finance, their plans were realised with the introduction of some of the most drastic economic reforms ever seen in a western democracy.
This feature documentary tells the story of how the new right elite took power and exercised it relentlessly to turn New Zealand into their version of the model free-market state.
The film was directed and written by Alister Barry.
“It was no accident that Someone Else’s Country wasn’t screened on TVNZ when it was completed in 1996. [...] But word spread. ‘You have to see this film!’ It explains how we got to where we are. It explains how the government could privatise Telecom even though 93% of us opposed it. It explains why and how the bastards did it! Extra Film Festival screenings had to be scheduled to cope with the crowds. Thousands of video copies were sold. Talkback radio hummed with indignation about why it wasn't on TV.” - Alister Barry, nzonscreen.co.nz
Someone Else’s Country (1996) will screen at 7pm, Wednesday 27 November, Friday 29 November and Thursday 5 December. At the Film Archive, 84 Taranaki St, Wellington.
