New Zealand Musician Helps American Scientists Quest to Cure Aging & Age Related Diseases

Musicians are well known for supporting a good cause. Bob Geldof supported famine victims and Bono supports AIDS charities. But a musician who supports finding a cure for aging which ultimately leads to immortality? That's something new!

It might sound a little far-fetched, but it’s exactly what Chris Sanders, a New Zealand based independent musician is doing with the release of his new single appropriately named I Wanna Live Forever.

He is the world’s first musician to support the search for immortality and is donating all proceeds from single sales to help fund the research, getting him plaudits from thousands of people across the USA.

“Musicians do a lot to support great causes,” says Chris, “but to me this is the ultimate cause that could allow people to really grow old gracefully without worrying about debilitating diseases. I am happy to be able to use my music to support this cause because at the end of the day the scientists like Dr. Andrews are the real rock stars who go unnoticed!”

Immortality has been a topic of science fantasy for thousands of years, but it seems Chris has real science fact on his side to back him up.

The brand new single, which is set to be used to promote a 2hr HBO documentary about immortality, was inspired by world-renowned, Reno based molecular biologist Dr. Bill Andrews, who Chris was fortunate enough to meet when he visited New Zealand in July this year.

The catchy pop tune tells a story of Dr. Andrews search for a cure for all age-related diseases and eventually immortality.

Dr. Andrews is a telomere biologist and one of the most highly regarded scientists in the USA. Described by Popular Science Magazine as ‘The Man Who Would Stop Time’ he has been featured on the Today Show, BBC and NBC documentaries and is currently starring in an HBO documentary.

For those who skipped biology at school, Telomeres are a region at the tips of your chromosomes that have been proven to shorten as we age. Just like the caps on your shoelaces, the older the telomeres get and the more worn out and shorter they become. When the telomeres become too short, they fall apart and all sorts of mutations start to happen leading to a long list of age related diseases like arthritis, Alzheimer’s, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and macular degeneration.

Dr. Andrews has spent the last 20 years on finding ways to extend human lifespan and healthspan through Telomere maintenance and was head of the team that discovered Telomerase, an enzyme that when switched on in our body will not only stop telomeres shortening but re-lengthen them as well. In fact using this technology, scientists have actually been able to reverse aging in mice, and Dr. Andrews believes we are just 3 years away from starting trials on a human age-reversal drug.

“When Chris first sent me a copy of the song I was amazed at how Chris had managed to capture my story in less than 4 minutes” says Dr. Andrews. “I have recently started a 45-day speaking tour of the USA which involves presenting my findings in front of crowds of over 1000 people. I decided to play Chris’ song in each presentation and it has been getting standing ovations from everyone. It’s already a hit!”

Chris Sanders, who previously released a debut EP ‘Home Away From Home’, has been on the New Zealand music scene for over 12 years, and supported some great NZ acts like Tim Finn (Crowded House), Evermore, Anika Moa and Dave Dobbyn, had his music featured on NZ on Air Hit discs and performed over 1600 live gigs.

The new single was recorded at Neil Finns Roundhead Studio and produced by Kiwi # 1 hit artist and Silver Scroll winner Rikki Morris.

Chris has a signature sound complete with infectious melodies, strong vocals and catchy guitars. You’ll definitely find yourself singing along to this tune.

Chris is becoming known in the music scene for supporting a good cause. Earlier in 2013 he embarked on a unique 6 date NZ tour throughout beauty salons (The You Beauty Tour) raising almost $2000 for women’s breast cancer charity ‘Look Good, Feel Better.’
