Newest World Champion Fuelled by Weet-Bix

Newest World Champion Fuelled by Weet-Bix

Ella Williams (18) entered the 2013 Women’s World Junior Championship in Brazil on a wild card and ended up on the wildest ride of her young life last week. Having taken on all-comers and ended-up a World Champion and the first New Zealand woman to win at this level, the humble young woman from Whangamata is reaping the benefits of years of practise, a hunger for success and the support of family, friends and brands like Sanitarium Weet-Bix.

Her sheer determination and finely-honed skills have now resulted in a Whangamata-style ticker-tape parade on Friday the 8th of November, and Weet-Bix will be there to help her celebrate in style. Jessica Manihera, Senior Brand Manager for Weet-Bix says, “We are so proud to have an ambassador for Weet-Bix the calibre of Ella. She truly represents everything that we hope to nurture in young Kiwis – a burning desire to do well at everything you set your mind to and using the right energy to help you get there. We can’t wait to see what she does next.”

Now at the top of the age-group rankings, Ella will no doubt be adjusting her sights on bigger prizes. But getting to the top takes time and money and it certainly takes a team to achieve such lofty goals. Weet-Bix identified Ella as a young woman with the drive, values and character they wanted to encourage other young Kiwis to emulate. They signed on as a sponsor in 2012 and Ella then started to work with the brand to develop a campaign, in conjunction with other young stars, which would inspire Kiwi youth to go that extra mile.

“I’ve just won a world title, which has been my dream since I was little,” says Ella, “but to get there I’ve had to work really hard, develop my technique day after day and do all the right things to ensure that I can compete. Food like Weet-Bix gives me sustained energy out there in the waves. It’s healthy, full of goodness and fuels me for hours and hours in the surf.”

Ella told the Waikato Times, "For me, coming from Whangamata, it makes other people believe that it doesn't matter where you came from. If you come from a small town, if you work hard it will come." Now that small town is celebrating her fantastic win in style with many of the town locals there to share the excitement with her.
