McCahon House Artists in Residence 2014 -2015 Announced
The McCahon House Trust is pleased to announce the three artists for the McCahon Artists’ Residency programme. Amy
Howden-Chapman, Daniel Malone and Campbell Paterson were selected from 37 artists who applied for the prestigious,
highly contested residencies’. The residencies are supported through funding from Creative NZ.
Amy Howden-Chapman
Amy Howden-Chapman is a Wellington born artist, who currently lives and works in Los Angles, USA. She holds a Masters
Degree in Fine Arts from the California Institute of the Arts, as well as a Masters degree in creative writing, and
Honours degree in Art History, from Victoria University Wellington.
Working primarily in the media of photography, performance, video and printed matter, Howden-Chapman’s work uses
language, movement and site-specificity to investigate moments of cultural and political change.
Howden-Chapman has exhibited extensively in New Zealand, the United States and Europe. Most recently her work has been
presented at Night Gallery, Los Angeles, and Auckland City Art Gallery and City Gallery Wellington. Major commissions
include The Flood my Chanting, A One Day Sculpture Project and the film Meanwhile produced for Hue and Cry.
Upcoming projects include the curatorial and online endeavor the Distance Plan, to be presented first at Favourite Goods
Gallery, Los Angeles and the collaborative project Sentiment analysis; Intuitions and Display, for The Living Art Museum
Reykjavik, Iceland.
Amy Howden Chapman will commence her residency in late Winter 2014. The judges’ comment; “Her work engages with relevant
contemporary issues such as climate change and the history of the anti-nuclear movement in NZ.”
Daniel Malone
Daniel Malone was born in Greymouth and is currently based in Warsaw, Poland. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Elam
School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland.
Daniel works with all media including performance, sculpture, video, sound, painting, photography, graphic design, and
ceramics. He works with spaces and objects to evoke situations that explore concepts of cultural identity and behaviour
that provoke philosophical and political questions.
Malone's work has been included in numerous international exhibitions including: Lodz Biennial; Turbulence: the 3rd
Auckland Triennial; the 2006 Singapore Biennale; The South Project's TRANS VERSA: Conversing Across the South, Santiago;
World Famous In New Zealand, Canberra Contemporary Art Space; and the 2004 Biennale of Sydney. Recent solo projects
include: Barbarian in the Garden, Sue Crockford Gallery, Auckland; The English Teacher, Gambia Castle, Auckland; Most
Ponte (bridge bridge), The Polish Institute, Rome; Up Rising / Down Rising, Kordegarda, Warsaw National Gallery and
Black Market Next to
My Name, Gambia Castle, Auckland.
Malone is currently working on two bodies of work, one for a forthcoming show at Hopkinson Mossman Gallery, and a solo
show at Galerai Arsenal, in Bialystok, Poland.
Daniel Malone arrives late spring to take up his residency. Judges comment; “The judges were interested to facilitate
his return to NZ to undertake his first residency here, linking his art research interests in both Poland and NZ”.
Campbell Paterson
Campbell Paterson was born in Portsmouth, England, and lives and works in Auckland. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts,
from the Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland.
Patterson creates short videos and sculptural objects that have been described as walking a fine line between stoic
pragmatism and repetitive absurdity, and his paintings have been referred to as stemming from his conscious immersion in
the mundane. In his video work he documents the use of his own body and its interactions with his immediate environment
such as Holding my Mother (ongoing), where he does just that, for as long as he can.
Patterson exhibits regularly at Michael Lett and has been invited to participate in numerous group shows in the UK,
Australia and New Zealand including the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art in Brisbane, 2009. Exhibitions
include Nestbeschmutzer at Southard Reid Gallery, London, There’s a Hole in the Sky Campbelltown Arts Centre, Sydney,
Reason and Rhyme at the Gertrude Contemporary, Melbourne, and at St Paul St Gallery, AUT, and Unnerved, The New Zealand
Project, at Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane.
Patterson is currently selecting and assembling material from recent travel trips, and concurrently on a book; a set of
oil paintings on small canvases involving many layers of painting, some large paintings that barely fit in his room and
some new performance/video work..
Campbell Paterson will take up his residency in Autumn 2015. The judges’ commented; “Campbell Paterson is an exciting
multi-media artist whose originality brings a freshness to New Zealand art”.
The Trust also acknowledges the support of all our sponsors and benefactors including TTCF, ASB Trust, and Waitakere
Ranges Local Board.
