Neil Finn - New Album
‘Dizzy Heights’ 7th February, 2014
New Track – ‘Divebomber’
Neil Finn has confirmed the release of a new album ‘Dizzy Heights’ through Lester Records via Kobalt Label Services (KLS) on 7th February 2014. Finn’s first release via KLS is available for pre-order http://smarturl.it/dizzyheights.
At 8am AEDT today Finn will be performing in a webcast from his Auckland studio. You will be able to see the full Roundhead Webcast here http://smarturl.it/neilfinnlive. It will include a Q and A, and a performance of three new songs from ‘Dizzy Heights’.
The album is led by a short film for ‘Divebomber’, which debuts on Neil's official YouTube channel. The film was made by Finn, after some images taken from the window of a plane abutted with footage of kids jumping into the sea in Greece. These grainy images play over the whirl of ‘Divebomber’ a song inspired by the World War II film of the same name. Co-produced by Dave Fridmann (Mercury Rev, The Flaming Lips, Tame Impala) the album was recorded between Finn’s Roundhead studio in Auckland and Fridmann’s Tarbox studio in upstate New York.
The record is Neil Finn’s third solo outing following, Try Whistling This and One Nil (or One All). “I didn’t want to make it a solo record in a stripped back singer-songwriter sort of way,” says Finn. “I had a feeling Dave would be good at adding some odd shapes to the music. Which I always welcome – making things a little more expansive. He is good at subverting things, and making things sound a bit messed up and not as obvious, rather than being too tasteful, which is always a temptation.”
Finn travelled in two bursts to producer Dave Fridmann’s Tarbox Road studio in upstate New York. With Fridmann, and in occasional collaboration with New Zealand musicians Connan Mockasin and SJD, Finn has assembled a textured, heady sound, furnished and elevated by woozy strings and soaring vocals.
