New Chair for Public Libraries of New Zealand
Public Libraries of New Zealand, the Association of Public Library Managers, has appointed Debbie Duncan, Upper Hutt
City’s Community Services Manager as its new chairperson.
Under Debbie’s leadership, Upper Hutt City Library has evolved its role, expanding digital services, creating new
community spaces and lifting library use among all members of the community. Her drive and commitment to the role of
libraries in the information age are well known across New Zealand public libraries.
Debbie is thrilled to take up the leadership role at a time when public libraries are transforming to meet the changing
needs of New Zealanders. She sees libraries as places “for communities, for innovation, for community growth and
leadership”.
Ms Duncan’s priorities during 2013 will be to ensure the Association continues to deliver actions that support the
national priorities of the Public Libraries Strategic Framework, continue to develop strategic alliances with external
stakeholders and provide a platform for all public libraries that supports collaborative and collegial practices.
Public Libraries of New Zealand also welcomes Chair Elect Glen Walker, Selwyn Libraries Manager, and Executive Committee
members Su Scott, Director Libraries at Hamilton City Council and Philip van Zijl, Waitaki District Libraries and
Archive Manager.
The Association extends its thanks and appreciation to retiring chair Paula Murdoch, Hastings District Libraries
Manager, and retiring committee members, Bernie Hawke, Dunedin City Group Manager Arts and Culture, and Brian Anderson,
Manager of Porirua City Libraries.
