Fire, search and rescue techniques come to life

NEW EXHIBITION EXPLORES IF YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A HERO

Rappelling down a sheer cliff face, communicating under thunderous chopper blades, squinting through the glare of flashing warning lights... Do you have what it takes to be a hero?

MOTAT’s latest visiting exhibition, Rescue, brings to life the fire, search and rescue techniques which save lives all over the world.

Opening 9 November, this interactive exhibition visiting from Australia’s SciTech museum, Rescue will educate visitors on the techniques that become lifelines for many people in need. From the air to the sea to on-land, Rescue delves into the immense operations and technology behind specialist rescue squads including rescue techniques, emergency supplies and equipment.

As well as demonstrating fire fighting, emergency services, surf lifesaving and sea-raft survival techniques, this exciting exhibition will also offer hands-on activities, real-life videos and graphic displays over 17 interactive exhibits.

The exhibition, developed in Western Australia, was designed to give an accurate reflection on the technology required for such actions, and acknowledges the vital skills that rescuers bring to each scenario.

MOTAT Marketing Manager Danielle Dunn explains, “This exhibition is all about interaction and engagement. Creating an environment where visitors can take part in rescues as the rescuer or casualty brings an understanding about what rescuers undertake as part of their everyday jobs.”

Full-body experiences will let visitors feel what it is like to be both the rescuer and in need of rescuing. The ‘Fire experience’ will have visitors getting down low and feeling their way to safety, ‘Helicopter rescue’ will let visitors climb aboard a life sized helicopter and take the driver’s seat in a rescue simulation and ‘Fight the Fire’ will test children’s ability to choose the correct extinguisher to put out a fire.

To launch Rescue, MOTAT will be holding a Fire and Rescue Day on Sunday 10 November, jam-packed with fire-engines and firemen galore.
