New ‘Poly-portal’ creates online home for Pacific communities

NZ On Air is proud to have supported the brand new online project thecoconet.tv.

thecoconet.tv is the first Pacific portal of its kind, featuring webisodes, animation, a 3D historic timeline, language learning games and daily blogs and vlogs. In the first few days since going live, thecoconet.tv has attracted more than 20,000 views and received great feedback from around the world.

The most popular content so far is the Poly Songbook, a karaoke style series of songs of the Pacific Islands. From ‘How to catch a coconut crab’ to ‘How to dance like a kuki princess’, or ‘How to dodge a flying jandal’, thecoconet.tv is all about how to operate the Pacific way in the modern day.

Producers Tikilounge Productions, received $499,272 from the NZ On Air 2012 Digital Media Kickstart Fund to create the website.

thecoconet.tv meets a very important need for Pacific youth audiences. It perfectly fits the expectations in our Pacific strategy of providing Pacific audiences with diverse content that is accessible, enjoyed and valued through multiple channels,” said Jane Wrightson, CEO of NZ On Air.

“We are always looking for new ways to engage specific audiences and we think sites like this that can entertain, educate and inspire young people are an important part of today’s broadcast environment,” said Ms Wrightson.
