An exhibition of selected drawings born out of the shadows of a dark Dunedin studio...

The fundamental intention Jo Robertson has with all her work is to translate various states of being.

Through using the figure as a foundation to express and explore human consciousness and experiences of living in this strange life, she works in her own intuitive way to formulate works of art that hopefully resonate with human beings on a deeper spiritual level.

Jo Robertson was born in Gore 1983 and spent 8 years of her life on a sheep farm in Waikoikoi, much of which she does not remember. She moved to a high country station near Middlemarch with her parents and lived there until she was 13. The period between ages 13 & 21 are much of a blur, with much travelling, general chaos and horror of the general shock of existence involved, but at the age of 22 she dropped out of part time study after five months at art school and discovered a place where she could make her own world, a studio in an old Halenstines sweat shop on Dowling Street, Dunedin.

It was at this particular juncture of her life that she had moved out of her scummy flat, broke up with her current boyfriend, set up permanent residence illegally in her studio, built herself a makeshift room out of bubble wrap, became “ unemployed ”, found a stereo in a rubbish pile, discovered P J Harvey late & threw herself at making art.

The drawings & paintings from that particular period of time symbolize an intense personal and spiritual exploration that lasted in that particular space for almost 10 years.

When she shifted out of her studio in 2012 a lot of the residue work was taken to a paddock and burnt. This current exhibition ' dRAWings ' comprises of a selection of work that survived from 2007, 2009 and 2012.

' dRAWings ' has traveled to various public gallery’s & not so public gallery's in the South Island inculding , Dowling Street Studios Dunedin, The Easturn Southland Gore, Ashburton Public Gallery and Aigantighe Public Art Gallery, Timaru.

This is the first time it will be exhibited in the North Island.

She is inspired by Quigong, Meditation, Rock ‘ n’ Roll, Dance and various spiritual beliefs.

Jo Robertson has now located her studio to an old PGG Wrightsons building in the wild obscure landscape of Middlemarch, an hour inland from Dunedin, and is currently re establishing her relationship with oil paint.
