Open Polytechnic graduate brings home silver at the Garden World Cup in Japan

Open Polytechnic Horticulture Graduate and Wellingtonian, Bayley LuuTomes, has just returned from Japan where he won
Silver at the prestigious 2013 Gardening World Cup Flower Show in Nagasaki, Japan.
Bayley was awarded Silver for his garden entitled, Glass Bottle Sanctuary. The garden, made up of recycled glass bottles
forming the shape of a koru, was inspired by a fusion of Asian and New Zealand culture.
“I took the kiwi’s love for the great outdoors and added a few Asian style garden principles. This garden is a
reflection of who I am as an Asian Kiwi. I can see myself using this space as a small intimate hang out space or a
hideaway retreat from the busy world,” says Bayley.
This Silver award is just the latest addition to Bayley’s impressive winning streak since claiming two Gold awards and
winning Young Designer of the Year at the 2012 Ellerslie International Flower show. He was also selected to represent
New Zealand at the 2013 Hampton Court Palace Flower show in London where he won a Silver award for his uniquely kiwi
native design. Bayley was also part of a team that exhibited at the esteemed Chelsea Flower Show in London.
Bayley has already made head waves into the international garden circle, and this has led to further opportunities
including returning to Ellerslie International Garden Show to exhibit his first garden for a charitable organisation,
Kids with Arthritis New Zealand .
