The finalists of the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards have been announced, and we're thrilled to see so many IMNZ artists named. NZ On Air have also released details of their latest round of funding recipients. The Audio Foundation in Auckland is hosting a very exciting music-related film festival in November, and there is also a short documentary available to watch which traces the history of the Rhythm n' Vines Festival. And for Labour Weekend, there are plenty of live shows to entertain you - check the info here plus in our Entertainment Extra that went out earlier this week. Have a great weekend!

MakingTracks Funding Decisions for October 2013
NZ On Air have announced the funding recipients for the October round. There were 133 eligible applications. Each of the 133 songs was listened to by each of our seven panelists. The process involves the panelists each picking their priority songs to recommend for funding. The panel then meets together to discuss the songs as a group before choosing the final list of projects to be given funding support.
Decisions are based on the broadcast, music and audience merits of the songs that have been submitted.

International and Industry Action
Blink has started a new music festival - Square Wave; featuring around 70 artists taking part in 36 shows around New Zealand. The winners of the 2013 Technical Awards were revealed on Tuesday night as part of the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards' finalists announcement event. The Tui for Best Album Cover has gone to Gina Kiel and Harry A’Court for Fat Freddy’s Drop’s ‘Blackbird’. The Phoenix Foundation with Lee Prebble and Brett Stanton nab two Tuis for ‘Fandango’, taking out Best Producer and Best Engineer. The recipient of the New Zealand Herald Legacy Award was also announced, and for the first time it goes to a female, Shona Laing. Laing first hit the spotlight aged 17 on the TV show New Faces with her hit ‘1905’. That song and ‘Show Your Love’ both went Gold and also peaked at #4 on the New Zealand charts. Laing spent some time in the UK in the 1970s where she was a vocalist with Manfred Mann’s Earth Band alongside fellow Kiwi Chris Thompson. Laing's highly acclaimed albums Genre (1985) and South (1987) were released on independent label Pagan Records.

And a hearty clap on the respective backs goes to all of the IMNZ artists who have been announced as finalists in the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards: Aaradhna, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Shapeshifter, The Phoenix Foundation, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Lawrence Arabia, Iva Lamkum, Beastwars, The Datsuns, @Peace, P-Money, Latinaotearoa, Soljah, Sola Rosa, Maisey Rika, Ngatapa Black and Go Stop Go. Guests at the awards ceremony on November 21 can look forward to a big night of great New Zealand music with live performances by Aaradhna, Lorde, Jamie McDell, Titanium, Iva Lamkum and awards co-host Stan Walker. There’s also a special tribute performance to Legacy Award recipient Shona Laing by Ruby Frost. And in a separate event, the 2013 line-up for the Critics’ Choice Prize includes multi-instrumentalist Daniel McBride aka Sheep, Dog & Wolf; US-based singer/songwriter Janine and the Mixtape; and Paquin – the musical outlet of songwriter Tom Healy. Established in 2010, the prize recognises up-and-coming artists and potential future Tui winners. Past Critics’ Choice Prize nominees include Kimbra and The Naked and Famous. The three 2013 contenders perform a live showcase at The Kings Arms in Auckland on November 6 before the prize recipient is announced on the night.

Auckland’s Audio Foundation will host three consecutive evenings of short lms, live concert-footage and documentaries between October 30 and November 1 as part of Reel Kiwi Underground festival.
Each evening will begin with a short featurette by D. Thomas Herkes - founder of Wellington-based Stink Magnetic Records, followed by a combination of live concert-footage and rare music videos including Fetus Productions clips presented by Jed Town, a re-cut of the Rumble & Bang! documentary on Chants R&B, an interview with the Pretty Things, and the famous and nal gig of the Skeptics at The Gluepot in 1990. Festival organiser and Skeptics' Sheen of Gold director, Simon Ogston, says the second Reel Kiwi Underground will "provide an opportunity for people to view independently-produced content that they wouldn't be able to see anywhere else. Each night presents an eclectic range of content, with the only prerequisite being that the films are entertaining and finished to a professional standard. Many of the filmmakers will be present to introduce their work and answer any questions." And continuing in the movie vein, a 15-minute documentary looking at the ten year journey of New Year’s music festival Rhythm and Vines is now available to watch online. Behind the Vines - Ten Years of R&V was shot by Ben Carter and Dan Maas under the direction of festival founder Hamish Pinkham and retells the story of Rhythm and Vines from its inception as an idea in a student flat to the three-day 30,000-capacity festival that it is today. On the live front
Catch the notoriously wild Hallelujah Picassos' reunion show at the Kings Arms, Saturday October 26, with the fine musical accompaniment of Blood Bags, Loud Ghost, and DJs Stinky Jim and Peter Mac. Tonight Gold Medal Famous present: A gig for the workers featuring Glass Eye and The Carnies, Tietz Syndrome, Cliche Guevara and Gold Medal Famous. Mt Maunganui is a renowned New Years Eve location, and this New Year, 2014 will be kicked off with the Mount Vibes festival at Baypark Stadium. The first lineup announcement includes The Black Seeds, I Am Giant, Homebrew, State of Mind, Optimus Gryme, Sons of Zion, Tomorrow People, Pieter T, Aaradhna, MC Woody, Chatchy, DJ Jayrasik, DJ Sanka and Mount Locals "VEGA". Dainty Group have announced a collaboration with Eminem to do headline shows with some of the world's biggest rap and urban stars across Australasian stadiums, including one New Zealand show, at Auckland's outdoor Western Springs Stadium on Saturday February 15th, 2014. Eminem has handpicked the now, and the next, for the debut dose of Rapture, and he's selected David Dallas, alongside Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole. Tickets: www.ticketmaster.co.nz

New release fanfare
New Zealand multi-instrumentalist and producer Lord Echo (aka Mike Fabulous) will release his sophomore album Curiosities in New Zealand Friday 15th November 2013 on CD, vinyl and digital. Curiosities is being released via Economy Records in New Zealand and will be distributed via Rhythmethod and DRM. The album is then being released on Wonderful Noise in Japan, Bastard Jazz in the US, UK and Australia, and Jakarta in Europe and South America. Fabs drew a groundswell of excitement around his debut solo album Melodies in late 2010, championed by tastemakers like Gilles Peterson (who played it repeatedly on his BBC Radio 1 show), Oliver Wang (Soulsides) and Richard Dorfmeister. Curiosities picks up right where Melodies left off, with the sun-drenched psychedelic dub sounds of tracks like “Bohemian Idol” (featuring vocals by Toby Laing of Fat Freddy's Drop), and the jerky funk vibes of cuts like “Digital Haircut” and “Street Knowledge”. The album provides a wealth of DJ fodder, with forward thinking 70s-inspired disco tunes such as “Molten Lava” (featuring the soaring vocals of Leila Adu), as well as analog Afro-infused burners like “What Is That Feeling” and “Put It In My Head” (complemented by the golden-voiced Mara TK of Electric Wire Hustle fame). Down-home spiritual jazz/electronic meanderings ("Ghost Hands", “Arabesque”) provide a counterpoint to Echo's driving cover-version of the Pharoah Sanders & Leon Thomas classic “The Creator Has a Master Plan”. His inspiring take on the track is uplifted by the soulful singing of Lisa Tomlins (who's notable vocals on Echo’s rendition of Sister Sledge’s “Thinking Of You” made it a standout hit from his Melodies album). Fabs is currently splitting his time between New Zealand and New York. In New York he is recording with Victor Axelrod (aka Ticklah) who has been a key player in the NY scene for the last decade and is affiliated with the Daptone crew, Antibalas and Mark Ronson (he played keys on Amy Winehouse Back To Black album). In New Zealand he is the house engineer for Wellington based Economy records (The Yoots!, Shogun Orchestra, Wild Bill Ricketts). Vodafone has been working with two heavyweight Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards (VNZMA) finalists Aaradhna and P-Money to produce a hot new single and video, ‘Dapper Man’, for this year’s awards. Dapper Man features on the official VNZMA smartphone app (soon to be available FREE), which provides the low down on New Zealand’s biggest night in music. HOMEBAKE 2013 CANCELLED

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Homebake 2013 has been cancelled”, reads a statement from Homebake organisers released this morning, citing the move from the Domain to a three-day event at the Opera House as being the reason.

“Over the last 4 weeks since the initial launch of Homebake 2013, it has become apparent based on the feedback from social media sites and the box office that the traditional Homebake fans have rejected this change in format from one day to three nights and the change in venue.”

Organisers also stated the scheduling of Harvest Festival at the Domain two weeks before the proposed 2013 date forced the unpopular venue and format change. The statement called Harvest’s cancellation shortly before Homebake’s announcement of their venue/format change “achingly ironic”.

Refunds will be automatically administered by the Sydney Opera House Box Office, while Oztix ticket buyers should contact Oztix.

From its inception in 1996 in Byron Bay, HOMEBAKE has been a staunch advocate and supporter of Australian music and of this country’s musicians.

In 1998 HOMEBAKE began its long association with the Domain as the preferred venue of choice, and for 15 years on the first Saturday in December, we came together to celebrate and support Australia’s best and brightest in music.

HOMEBAKE 2013 has proven to be a difficult beast to produce and promote due to scheduling issues with our ancestral home at the Domain. For reasons beyond our control or desire, and after a 15 year run, we were advised that for this year, the Domain had also confirmed another music festival that appealed to a similar audience and scheduled to run a mere 2 weeks before our proposed HOMEBAKE date.
