PRESS RELEASE:
{SUITE} TO EXHIBIT MASTERWORK BY FRANCES HODGKINS ‘Tithe Barn, Cerne Abbas’
{Suite} invites you to view a masterwork by one of New Zealand’s most acclaimed and influential artists, Frances Hodgkins. Titled ‘Tithe Barn, Cerne Abbas’ the work has recently arrived in New Zealand having been owned previously by one family in the UK. The work was painted in 1943 while the artist seeked solace in the village of Corfe Castle, Dorset during the hardships of war time England. The surrounding agricultural landscape provided Hodgkins with rich motifs and illustrates how adept she was in modifying her paintings in response to local conditions. Working in her signature gouache and characterised by her strong use of colour and lyrical treatment of form, this is a work that is testament to hope, regeneration and resurrection.
Frances Hodgkins (28 April 1869 – 13 May 1947) was born in New Zealand but spent most of her working life in Britain where she was highly considered among British avant-garde society, and by the later stages of her career was known as a key figure in British Modernism.
The Frances Hodgkins Fellowship, established in 1962 at the University of Otago in Dunedin is named after her.
View at {Suite} Gallery for four days only; 30th October to 2nd November 2013.
