Arts transforms city

An excited buzz is building in the city with various venues transforming in anticipation of Friday’s Nelson Arts
Festival launch.
A team of around 30 people are busy preparing specialised rigging, lighting, sound systems, vintage design and
decoration around the city centre for more than 70 events and six international acts.
There will also be art installations appearing at Founders Park, quirky art displays appearing in city shop windows and
an arts exhibition at Nelson Cathedral over the course of the Festival.
The Festival – which runs from 11 to 28 October – is presented by Nelson City Council as a celebration for locals and an
attraction for visitors.
“While the hub of the Festival will be at Founders Park what’s unique this year is we’re also staging several
performances in unconventional venues like at a hair salon, the old Founders Livery and a specially designed
circus-themed stage. It’s really going to provide something fresh and push the boundaries,” says Deputy Mayor Ali
Boswijk.
“Tickets are selling well and we also have an excellent line-up of free community events and gigs that will appeal to
all interests. It’s that time of year again when Nelson comes alive for 17-days of fun and excitement,” says Ali.
Highlights will include the Masked Parade on October 18, the 20-member Leshan Song and Dance Troupe from China, 14
Readers and Writers sessions, leading Australian contemporary circus Knee Deep, and 12 free gigs by local and visiting talent at the Granary Festival Cafe.
