New Zealand Symphony Orchestra announces 2014 Season

The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra invites listeners to discover its 2014 Season, announced today.

Showcasing their impressive talent, the NZSO will collaborate with giants of the conducting world and stunning international soloists to perform wonderful orchestral masterpieces as well as incredible contemporary music from home and abroad.

Maestros like Edo de Waart and Alexander Lazarev will lead the orchestra in vast works such as Mahler’s 9th and Shostakovich’s 15th symphonies. NZSO Music Director Pietari Inkinen will display his remarkable abilities conducting two cycles of Beethoven’s nine symphonies, with each cycle played over four nights. The final symphony will include a stunning line-up of international opera stars, ensuring an unforgettable climax to this beloved masterpiece.

Experienced virtuosos such as Håkan Hardenberger – rated as the greatest trumpeter alive – and the extraordinary pianist Alexander Melnikov will grace stages across New Zealand, along with new stars of the classical world including American cello prodigy Alisa Weilerstein and Simone Lamsma, one of the world’s leading violinists. These and other gifted guest artists are sought after in famed concert halls and opera houses around the world, enchanting audiences with their technical mastery and exceptional talent.

For audiences, hearing old favourites will refuel minds and revitalise spirits, while new discoveries are certain to reward those who are adventurous. Highlights include works by Grieg, Tchaikovsky and Richard Strauss; Haydn’s magnificent oratorio The Creation, led by renowned Haydn specialist Nicholas McGegan; a new commission from New Zealand composer Gareth Farr; and works by acclaimed Scottish composer James MacMillan.

The NZSO will perform in 14 centres across New Zealand – more details for all concerts are on the NZSO website. A special mini-website featuring digital content and extra information about the 2014 Season will be introduced later this month, and on 1 November the NZSO enter a new digital phase with the launch of a 2014 Season App.
