Carter Observatory’s First Ever Photo Competition

24 September 2013

Capture ‘Light and Dark’ in a Photo and Win!

Carter Observatory’s First Ever Photo Competition

Carter Observatory are calling all Greater Wellington photographers of all ages – amateur and professional – to enter our first ever photography competition with the theme of ‘Light and Dark’.

Photography is the art of capturing light, contrast and shadow. We’re often excited by the amazing images we receive every week from local sky watchers. What better way to showcase the brilliance of regional photographers than a competition in conjunction with the current Light&Dark season here at Carter Observatory.

Five internationally recognised photographers including Mark Gee, Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2013, will decide on the excellence of each photograph and how well the image meets the category title, ‘Light and Dark.’

“Photography is a wonderful and unstable mixture of art and science. While it faithfully records reality, it makes the distinction that no two realities are exactly the same and that is where talent, inspiration and creativity come in,” says judge Paul Thompson, Deputy Director of Museums Wellington.

Eighteen finalists will have their work exhibited and sold through our shop at Carter Observatory. Among the prizes are a private 2 hour tour of the sky with an astronomer and one of Carter’s amazing telescopes, a signed Mark Gee print, a year’s membership to Wellington Photography Society, Wellington Photographic Supplies vouchers, and for the youngsters, an iPad mini! There are three categories: adults, young adults, and children, with each entry allowed up to three photos. Members of Public can vote for the People’s Choice award during the exhibition.

Download the PDF or visit the Carter Observatory website (www.carterobservatory.org) for entry details. Keep an eye on Facebook for regular updates (www.facebook.com/carterobservatory).

Award winners will be announced on 10 January at a special function.
