Aucklander William Tokelau Wins Homai Te Pakipaki 2013
Maori Television is pleased to announce that the winner of HOMAI TE PAKIPAKI 2013 is William (Wiz) Tokelau, from Otara.
The 24-year-old karaoke star wowed a full house at the series’ live Grand Final at Auckland’s Logan Campbell Centre last night, singing the Amy Winehouse version of Cupid by Sam Cooke.
Tokelau (Te Atihaunui a Paparangi) takes home $20,000 in prize money, a Samsung Galaxy S4 and $100 top up courtesy of partner sponsor 2Degrees and the mana of taking out the title of HOMAI TE PAKIPAKI 2013.
‘I feel like this is a blessing from above,” he says. “I am so stoked to have got this far in the competition.”
Wiz, who recently moved to the North Shore, says after paying a few bills, he would like to invest some of the prize money into music production equipment and instruments so he can record music at home.
His grandmother, Mafieva Tokelau, who adopted him as a baby, was delighted with his HOMAI TE PAKIPAKI success.
“I prayed to god to help William have a nice voice so this is a very nice surprise,” she says.
Following William Tokelau in the text-voting for the runner-up prize was another Aucklander, Michael Steedman from Panmure (Ngati Whatua).
Steedman dedicated his song, Real Love, to his wife, who died this year of cancer. He says the support and positive affirmations he received since entering the competition have been amazing.
Hundreds of people lined up early at the Logan Campbell Centre yesterday afternoon to get a seat at the HOMAI TE PAKIPAKI 2013 Grand Final, which was hosted by Brent Mio, Taupunakohe Tocker and Pikiteora Mura-Hita.
