Paint, Paper, Timber and a Bit of ‘Rock ‘n Roll’ - National Art Competition Takes Home Décor to a New Level
A Wellington based artist and designer, an Auckland architect a North Shore artist and a top New Zealand post graduate
designer are finalists in a unique art competition to be showcased at the Waikato Home and Garden Show which opens on
Thursday.
Four retro-style Smeg FAB refrigerators are being delivered to Claudelands Events Centre after the artists spent three
weeks putting their very distinct interpretations on the state-of-the-art products.
The extraordinary works were judged by Askew One, a multi-disciplinary artist best known for his graffiti art paintings,
artist Dave Sotogi, well known European and Samoan contemporary artist, fashion designer Kiri Nathan and award-winning
kitchen designer Robin Caudwell of Design CK. Visitors to the Waikato Home & Garden Show can also post their Public Choice vote for the works.
Wellington artist and designer Mark Ussher’s bold design represents the 1950s housewife. Architect Mark Frazerhurst,
entered the competition to explore the idea that architecture explores every aspect of the built environment, and
people's experience with it by treating it in an unexpected way to make it appear conceptually as something else. Mike
Grobelny, a design technician at AUT produced an intricate design using cedar, taking inspiration from the honey bee
while exploring the idea of sustainable ways of storing food. Jayne Anderson, a graphic designer and illustrator said
the iconic Smeg fridge reminded her of an era full of music, fun, colour and funky neon lights. Her design evolved using
image research and computer aided design, as well as basic artist tools, such as paper, scissors and “a bit of ‘rock n
roll”.
The four finalists had three weeks to execute their designs onto the fridges, after the initial judging of design
submissions.
The public have until 10th October to vote for their favourite of the four Smeg FAB Art Competition refrigerators, which
will be on display on the Smeg stand at the Show. Entrants go into the draw to win a Smeg FAB10 ’50s-style mini
refrigerator valued at $3699.
After the Home Show, the refrigerators will be donated to children’s charity Hands Across the Water, and auctioned on 15
October. All the proceeds will be given to the charity, which helps at-risk Thai children and their communities,
providing safe, caring, learning environments.
