Exciting New Faces in 2014 Haier Pulse Squad
Media Release
30 September 2013
The Haier Pulse squad for 2014 has been unveiled, with coach Robyn Broughton opting for a mix of highly-experienced internationals, an exciting group of young players and the return of some familiar faces.
The majority of the team which achieved a record number of wins in the 2013 ANZ Championship will be returning to lead the push for a play-off spot, and they will be boosted by the addition of the world’s most prolific shooter, Irene van Dyk.
Other new faces are Gemma Hazeldine, who was a member of the New Zealand U21 side which won the World Youth Netball Championships in Glasgow in August and midcourter Elias Shadrock, who played for the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic in their championship-winning season. They will join the promising Claire Kersten, back for a second season after making her debut in 2013.
Katarina Cooper returns to the Haier Pulse after missing the entire 2013 season through a serious knee injury, along with English international defender Ama Agbeze, who played for the franchise in 2010 before moving to the West Coast Fever.
Included are six current Silver Ferns squad members, captain Katrina Grant, Katarina Cooper, Joline Henry, Camilla Lees, Te Huinga Reo Selby-Rickit and Irene van Dyk, and former Ferns Paula Griffin, Liana Leota and Donna Wilkins.
Ian Collier, Chairman of Netball Central Zone and the Haier Pulse, acknowledged the amount of work that had gone on behind the scenes to bring the squad together. “It has been critcially important that we respect the process and the requirements of our stakeholders particularly our sponsors, TTNL and the players. Since the end of last season, our focus has been firmly on 2014 and these last few months have been an extremely busy time in terms of securing players and sponsors for next season. Our staff and board have worked tirelessly throughout this process to secure a team who we firmly believe are capable of winning the ANZ Championship next year.
“Our early season membership renewal figures show that a record number of supporters have already signed up to be part of our team in 2014 and with new memberships going on sale on Tuesday October 1st, we anticipate that tickets for our home games will be in even greater demand than ever before. These are exciting times for the Haier Pulse and we are all looking forward to watching this squad take the court for the first time against defending champions the Adelaide Thunderbirds on March 3rd.”
