The history of Corbans Winery told in Sign Language

Part of the Auckland Heritage Festival
2013
Saturday 12 October, 10am – 12pm
For over half century, West Auckland has been home to a significant Deaf community in New Zealand. With the establishment of the former school for the Deaf in Titirangi, (Lopdell House), and the Kelston Deaf Education Centre in Archibald Road, many Deaf people moved to the West to live and congregate around the area. For years, it has been challenging for the Deaf to interact and engage in community events that allow participation, communication and exchange. With the initiative of Deaf Arts Network New Zealand in association with the Corban Estate Arts Centre, the Deaf community can now participate more readily in local community events.
As part of Auckland Heritage Festival 2013 (28 September - 13 October), the Deaf Arts Network New Zealand and Corban Estate Arts Centre are offering a ‘free day out’ tailored for the Deaf community. The Corban's Winery Walk is an invitation to join a 2km walk that enables deaf people to learn about the wine industry pioneered in West Auckland. The walk will be interpreted in Sign Language (NZSL), one of New Zealand's three official languages, and will also welcome their hearing families, friends and other members of the public who’d like to enjoy a day outdoors. After the tour, participants will have the opportunity to take part in a Deaf-led walkabout, view three exhibitions on site and have a get-together lunch.
Deaf Arts Network NZ is based at Corban Estate Arts Centre, a place where the Deaf can feel confident to drop by and mix with the local community. Voluntary Liaison Officer, Rachel Coppage, herself Deaf, organises accessible events that break down barriers and improve Deaf people's quality of life through the arts. She hopes to see more opportunities for the Deaf, their friends and families to engage with their community. Rachel acknowledges the commitment of the Arts Centre to welcome the diversity of Auckland's ethnic communities, including the signing Deaf community.
This initiative has received the generous funding support from Henderson - Massey Local Board.
If interested, please register a place and RSVP by 5 October. To book email deafartsnetworknz@gmail.com. Minimum of 15 people required to make the day happen for Deaf people and hearing friends & family.
